Actual headline: Why Tho: My birthday kid wants to invite everyone in class to his party - but not this 1 boy

Dear Lizzy,

My son is in third grade, and his birthday is coming up. He’s told me he wants to invite his whole class to his party (at a park) except for one kid.

This kid is a menace, if I am honest. He breaks things in class and yells and hits. He is actually quite mean to my son. I want to respect my son’s wishes here, but is it fair to invite everyone except him?

+ MULTIPLE asparagus spears emerging!
+ finally managed to book 2/3 of my birthday trip flights
- something in how I configure my browser means I cannot interact with the airline website and must do everything on the library computers
- I bragged to my therapist yesterday about how productive and upbeat I am now that it's properly spring and today I think my everything is made of molasses

I've managed to get another two vids up this past week, for Star Trek and Sharpe.

Old Friends/Bookends

If I'd found fandom in my teen years, Kirk/Spock would have been my first slash pairing. And Simon & Garfunkel were one of my favourite music groups in high school. So making a bittersweet K/S vid to S&G's Old Friends/Bookends just made sense to me. Footage is mostly from The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan, so fair warning that it doesn't exactly have a happy ending.

The Soldiering Life

Sharpe and Harper are another pairing I adore, and The Decembrists' song The Soldiering Life seemed made for them.

Hey did you know what happens when two highly ADHD nerds get engaged?

They forget to tell people for ages and then drop it into casual conversation and are confused that people are shocked. So uh. Yeah. Tuesday and I are gonna get married sometime!

I am not particularly good at dramatic romantic gestures, and I'm definitely not good at like. Sharing romantic things in my life with the rest of the world. There's a lot of things that make me nervous and weird about it. Tuesday doesn't make me nervous1 though! They make me happy, over and over and again, and have been doing so for many years now. And are gonna do so for many years to come, is at least the plan! I'm very happy about it!!!

The most likely time for the wedding is "Iunno, maybe 2028?", for both obvious and non-obvious reasons. We're currently in an opposite-of-race with our respective younger siblings about who can get married last, which is very funny. Tuesday has rejected my offer of "okay but hear me out, let's do like twenty weddings" but then countered with "what about one wedding per person we want to invite?" because the two of us are in love with each other but also very much in love with the bit. You'll get accurate details about how many we actually plan to have closer to when we actually decide to have it. (them >.>)

We do intend to get photos at some point, but in the meantime just keep taking cute selfies of us at places --I'll drop a nice one that she took at Pinewoods last summer in the bottom of this post. I want to get them a pretty ring, but we're doing it slow to figure out something they actually want and would wear regularly. In the meantime we've got a lovely pair of matching fidget rings we got at the Rennfaire last October. I really like wearing mine!

I don't know what else to say here. It's 2026 and America is miserable. We're both queer and every day we don't get forcibly removed from the country is a success. We are joyful and happy together and we have families that like each others company --we've started overlapping our holidays in a way that feels real successful! We still don't live in the same place, but that's a longterm plan that we want to make happen, and I like thinking about the ways my life will be like when that happens. Sometimes I'm terrified to even believe I'm allowed to have a future. I'm terrified to try and think about what might happen because all of it is just overwhelming and scary and depressing.

Sorky and Tuesday!

....But at least we'll be fighting the scary stuff together. That's pretty cool.

~Sor (and Tuesday <3)
MOOP!

1: ke does make me weird, but that's definitely on the "pro" column :3

The thing with recent brain space being mostly taken up with John Constantine
is that I'm not getting plot bunnies about fighting demons, as per baseline metaphor,
I'm just getting detailed daydreams about getting him to maybe possibly talk to the NHS again, this time maybe with informed care and actual modern treatment options.

It's interesting in the 2014 TV show it comes up that a character who had cancer until someone did a Deal reassured the person they were trying to talk out of the Deal by saying treatment is way better now, but so much plot depends on treatment just not working. Any kind. If it actually helped it wouldn't be a horror show. there'd be other options.

and yet horrors persist even with adequate medical treatments, so there's a corner to pull the story around somehow.

John needs a hug so much, let alone actual help,
and, also,
John makes so many of his own problems.

these are of course not unrelated.

But get him to actually quit the bad stuff and get all polished up and have friends and a team
and you have Legends of Tomorrow, more or less,
and then they undid it all to put him back in the box the way they found him.

for him to be in character he needs all his sharp edges left on
but you want him to be happy instead.

hence daydreams, not plot bunnies.

I should go back to rewatching Legends of Tomorrow.

our times are in your hand

Stayed home from church yesterday to attend the virtual memorial for Ny, which was heartbreaking in a different way than the in-person memorial was. I'm glad I was able to do both.

Today is my birthday, and next week an out of state friend (not on DW) I've never met in analog space is coming to visit. Even in death, we are in the midst of life.

Going for a walk and seeing the ducks (tiny!) is very good
but then I have to have a lie down and there goes the rest of the day.

Ducks are good and flowers are good and trees are good too though.

A huge, HUGE thank you to everyone yesterday who helped spread the word about our campaign to fund publishing our next two anthologies: Ducks in a Row: A Curated Collection of Stories and Duxxx in a Row: A Curated Collection of Explicit Stories. With your help (and of course the awesome support of the people who decided to buy one or more of the books!) we’ve reached our base funding goal!

Our campaign will officially end, successfully, tomorrow at 10 a.m. Eastern time, but we’ll be open for late pledges for at least a couple weeks, so even if you miss the deadline, you won’t miss the books!

Check out our Kickstarter to get two anthologies with over 40 stories, and some fun merch too!

A banner with text that reads Ducks in a Row | Duxxx in a Row, Curated Collections of Queer Stories. Beside this are two mock-ups of books, their cover titles matching the text. Duxxx shows art of a line of people sunning themselves on the beach while reading, and Ducks shows a group of people cuddling in a pillowfort while one of them reads aloud. There's a "Projects We Love - Kickstarter" badge in the upper right corner. Black text has been added that says Final 24 Hours!

I'm trying out the Gideon Method with both my writing and craft projects. The short version is: you have five 'slots' for works in progress. You work for about 12 hours on one project, and then you got to the next project in the queue for about 12 hours, rinse and repeat. Once a project is done, it's slot is opened and you can add a new project to the rotation.

I'm not sure how well it will work with writing compared to crafts? With writing you're much more likely to go "wait, what was I doing with this one again?" But it seems worth an experiment.

Behold, my current Gideon queue:

A table of projects with room to track time next to them. The writing projects are 'Emperor/Favourite', the current project 'Fandom Trumps Hate', 'Prompt fic,' 'Death Game Streamers/Thread of Duty', and 'Sapphic Steppe Atrocities.' (← the fact I am going ‘nyaaargh!’ about it being on the list is either a sign it should be on the list, or sign it should be very not on the list until Emperor/Favourite needs to go into a drawer). The next writing project to be added is 'Orc/Drow'. The craft projects are 'Noro cowl,' 'charity cotton,' 'charity wool,' 'christmas beanies,' 'first jumper' and the next in the queue 'the doomed watermelon crop top.'

*realizes it's been a month since I last casually posted something*

... gee wiz. I sure do have time distortion!

Instead of once again pressuring myself into typing up The Blog to End All Blogs, I just thought saying hi would be... nice enough!

Let's see, uh... my partner and I have been trying to spend more time outside (sometimes means spending money, but a lot of times involves spending money--which we're willing to do! Just means we have to adjust our budget, or put savings goal targets farther into the future, aheh. I'm trying to live more in the now than being too scared about the future? Not that we haven't set aside stuff for the future... things have been... wild the past decade, eh?)

I've been trying very much to declutter the office unit so whatever's in it really is directly aligned to "running a printshop smoothly" primarily, "a place I can stream comfortably" second, and "a place where I can work on art (and maybe art merch)" third. Which means having to face the clutter I have once again accumulated for Idealized!Me Who Definitely Has the Time and Energy and Creativity to Do ALL The Creative Projects one day! (ONE DAY) and just... biting the bullet and accepting the losses on those.

(Because the longer I keep stuff on hand "because I could earn a bit of money from them!" the longer I put them off and the more hoarded the space is gonna become and AUGHHH YES I can try to sell em but I've set up a deadline and once I hit it THEY MUST GO GO GO GO they are NOT paying their weight in rent!)

Note to self: try not to overwork tonight, the Blood Moon is predicted to arrive between Wednesday to Saturday, and you have a TON of orders left to complete for this week's events. Wew.

---

Oh! My partner and I started the Zero Escape series on New Year's Eve with 999, and we finished the last game in the series (Zero Time Dilemma) last week, if I remember correctly. Had that series on my to-play list for a long time and I'm glad we finally got to play it! I'll dump my thoughts on each game... someday. Which isn't today. But maybe if I say so here, I'll remember to talk about it next time I land on Dreamwidth again!
