hushpiper: flesh of thy flesh, bone of thy bone / I here, thou there, yet both but one (snuggle)

I was asked today what sort of tattoo I'd have, if I had to get one. Since it's one of those get-to-know-you questions that you tend to get asked a fair bit, I figured I'd repost my answer here.

My tattoo would be something like this:

On my feet, with geometric designs in the style of North African henna.

Why?

Because it's meaningless. I've long been of the opinion that anything you're going to have to live with for the long term--names, tattoos, etc.--should be simple, meaningless, and have no particular personal connotations other than aesthetic appeal. People change too quickly--or at least I do--for anything based in personal meaning to fit for long; soon you'll start to grow out of it, and names and tattoos are hard to erase. But meaningless things can comfortably stretch to fit whatever shape you are, rather like a particularly nice pair of leather gloves.

As for why feet: Feet are inherently pretty, moreso with designs on them, and they're easily covered at work or in whatever situation you don't want people to see your tattoos. It would probably hurt a hell of a lot more, but whatevs. I'm a tough girl. ;)

I disagree. The tattoos I have I chose because they have a very deep meaning, at least to me. Tattoos are unchanging, and they represent the unchanging parts of me, things that have been with me for a long time, and will continue to be with me until I die. But they don't only have one meaning, and that is what I think is important - tattoos should have a broad meaning as to what they represent to you. I would never get a name tattood on me, or a picture of someone, because those things have only one meaning. Symbols, otoh, have several different meanings. In that way, they are unchanging, but not static, if you know what I mean?

And as an addendum that came to me yesterday: sometimes, tattoos can function as a kind of anchor. They can remind you of things about yourself that you do not want to forget, that you want to keep even though all the changes life brings. That one was one of the reasons I got my unicorn tattoo. I do not ever want to forget what I am.

It's also why I am looking into getting some kind of writing/storytelling tattoo. I forgot, buried that part of me for almost a decade, and I don't want it to happen again, because it's something that brings me more joy than anything else.
